Provisions

Don’t you just love it when God provides an unexpected blessing? Last Thursday at church I was chatting with friends about our camping trip and a friend offered to loan us Therm-a-rest camping mats as well as warmer sleeping bags. I followed her home from church and picked up the supplies. Those camping mats made a huge difference in our trip. We were very warm inside our tent even though it dropped below freezing the first night. The extra sleeping bags allowed the kids to double up and they stayed warm as well.
After our camping trip we had planned to stop on the way home to pick apples at a farm. We were all so dirty and tired we decided to skip the picking. The kids were disappointed but they all understood. Then on the way home we came across a pear tree. There were lots of pears just laying all over the ground in perfect condition. We took them home, but I am not sure about eating them. Can you help me identify these pears? Also do you have any good pear recipes?
I came home from the weekend and had an email in my inbox regarding free Colonial Williamsburg tickets for veterans. I am so excited that we will be able go again and we will all get in free.
After our perfect camping weekend I couldn’t have dreamed that it could get better and yet now we have a trip to Williamsburg planned for next week. The kids are already counting down the days until we leave!

These pear muffins are a hit at my house:

I also like to make pear crisp, and someone told me to make pear sauce just the same as I would make applesauce.
Enjoy those pears!

They look like packham pears but you might have a different name for them. try google imaging “packham pears” and see what you get, if they look the same then thats them
They should be ok to eat, just rinse them in water.

Are they a pretty hard pear? We had a pear tree growing up, and they were hard pears that looked similar. When they finally got soft they had a texture we didn’t like as kids. Our tree was a Kiefer pear tree. Its a hybrid that was supposedly pretty popular in the early 1900s. Its usually easier to ID the tree since they always look ragged (they lose lots of branches in ice storms, and sometimes from heavy fruit) Anyway, they are edible. I googled it and there are lots of people who put up pear butter and preserves using Kiefer pears, and even just canned pears.

I DO love how God always provides. And how he often does it in such unexpected ways.
SO, glad you stayed warm enough on your camping trip. Makes me cold just thinking about it (even though you said you stayed warm…just the thought of being out there in freezing temps makes me cold. Anyway…)

What a blessing to have friends offer those items for your camping trip. I’m sure that helped quite a bit.

WOW!
The blessings of God are endless, aren’t they?!?!?
I made pear-sauce and jelly with a bunch of pears this summer.
