Use the Library: 10 Days of Frugal Homeschooling

The library is an excellent source of FREE educational materials. If you think libraries only have books, think again. Libraries have come a long way in the past 20 years. Most libraries have newspapers, magazines, audio books, and movies available for free. Before you buy your homeschool resource books, check your local library to see what they have on the shelves. You will save a lot of money borrowing your books instead of buying them.

If your county library doesn’t have a wide variety of resources get a library card for a neighboring county library. Many times you can get a card for free or for a small yearly fee. If you are checking out 20 books a week the fee is worth it for access to better resources.

In our family we always check out a book from the library before we buy it! If we find we are checking the same book out over and over again it is time to buy the book.

If you are racking up library late fees read my trick for avoiding library fines! I haven’t paid a fine in years using this method, so I highly recommend it.

I’m partnering with 15 awesome bloggers to bring you some of the best homeschooling tips on the web! Be sure to visit these brilliant women in this 10 days adventure between February 7th-18th!

  1. Oh, this looks like such a fun carnival! Can’t wait to read all the posts. I love my library and so do my girls. I do tend to pay fines frequently and usually it’s because I don’t turn in the books at the right time. I’ll need to try your method!

  3. We just came in from visiting our bookmobile! We love it as it stops right at our front door every other Monday. We are very lucky. :D The library/bookmobile is one of our favorite places.

  4. We LOVE the library! Look forward to reading more during the blog hop!

oh thanks for this! I wish their was a magic wand to “like” them all on FB at once :)

  6. Hey Toni! I am thrilled that you all are doing this. For weeks now we have been working on building up a routine with the kids and we officially start kindergarten in the fall with Eli. So these sources are wonderful! I already learned today that reporting for our state starts at age 6, so I can breathe for another year and a half while we learn the ins and outs of homeschooling! Can’t wait to see the rest of the posts!

We make more than one trip to the library weekly since I create our geography and science unit studies!

Love, love, love our library. It is part of a multi-county/city system with liberal borrowing policies from other library systems. Some of the staff could be friendlier but you just can’t beat the bargain of a good library.
