The Book Nook

Aren’t these fabric bookshelves cute? I found them on Pinterest but I can’t find the tutorial anywhere. If you know how to make these please share!

Someone made these for our nursery at church! I will try to find out for you tomorrow. :)

There was an article in Family Fun Magazine last year featuring a Book Sling. The instructions are also on their website (familyfun.go.com). If you search for “The Book Sling” on their site, you can get step-by-step instructions. I made slings earlier in the summer (I let my girls choose the fabric)… I just haven’t put them up yet. I usually have difficulty with anything fabric but these were really quite simple to put together-no sewing! I hope this helps!

I’m pretty sure it’s a double curtain rod with one piece of fabric. Does that make sense?

I’ve seen instructions on familyfun.com after having seen it originally in their magazine. Search for “book sling” since I can’t figure out how to copy the link with my iPhone!

I am going to make them for my son’s room.

Here’s a tutorial I had bookmarked on how to make fabric bookshelves. I’m trying to decide between that and rain gutter bookshelves for my kids’ rooms.

I searched online and found a tutorial at Apartment Therapy for kids – Ohdeedoh. Here’s a link: http://www.ohdeedoh.com/ohdeedoh/february-jumpstart-2009-entries/how-to-make-a-hanging-book-display-megans-february-jumpstart-project-2009-077231?image_id=3151

Even though I just finished painting my daughter’s bookshelf, now I’m thinking about the day to hang a little fabric bookshelf right by her bed. What a cute, practical, inexpensive idea!

I made one of these for our house and was disappointed. It was very hard to get books in and out, epecially if they were shorter than the material. Also, the opening wasn’t very big and it didn’t actually hold very may books. Maybe you’ll have better luck. My suggestion would be to find the smallest circumference of wooden dowels that will hold the books…and then find brackets that are as wide as you can find to make it easier to get the books in and out.

  22. Gina says:

This is a neat idea! Cheap way to do those awesome book-facing-front shelves that I loved having as a teacher. I can see how Jennifer’s comments would be true though. I wonder if you could put heavy-duty elastic or something else sturdy but flexible through one of the casings instead of two dowels? It might not look quite as tidy, but possibly more user friendly? Another thought – hang the dowels on two separate sets of brackets to make more of an angle like this: http://www.porterhousecrafts.com/product/kids/fabric_sling_bookshelf__pastel-KID-14225.htm

Do you think you might make one?

These are great! I know I have seen them before. Thanks to everyone for linking the tutorial. Now that my boys are reading on their own for good chunks of the day, these would be so handy!

PS – Our current reading list matches yours almost exactly :) I LOVE the Jesus Storybook Bible! It’s awesome at connecting everything to Christ. More than once my boys have caught me tearing up reading it to them :) It’s so great.
