No Homeschool on Your Birthday

One of our family traditions is that you get to take the day off of homeschooling on your birthday. My two kids with summer birthdays lose out on this deal, but my other kids love their special “no school” birthday.

Ah, yes… I think this was one of my favorite things about being homeschooled! lol

We do this with two of my DDs. One has a summer birthday, one always has a two week spring break surrounding her birthday. So the other two get their birthdays off if they fall on a school day. Of course, the one thing we can’t control is if it falls on a co-op day. We still have to go to that.

We go out to dinner when one of them finishes their curriculum in a subject for the year. We don’t go out to eat very often, so it is a big treat. These dinners usually start about the time we are all entering the dreaded homeschool slump, so it really helps them to push to the finish!

We don’t get alot of snow in Oregon. But when it did I would let the kids go out and play in it in the morning. That gives them PE because they are running around and making snowballs and snowmen and having fun.

We do that, too! The kids’ birthdays are an official school holiday for all of us in our house. (I think some of their public-schooled friends are jealous.) Last Friday, we even took the day off in on the birthday of our daughter Jessica who died as a baby and would have been 16 this year. It was a good day to honor her, and so nice to not be doing school on that bittersweet day. :)

Um, I guess I edited my comment but didn’t quite delete all of what I had in it at first! :( That would be, “we even took the day off on the birthday of our daughter Jessica…”
