National Geographic make a wonderful Christmas gift, birthday gift, or graduation gift. We gave a life time subscription to our son when he turned 13… 40 years ago, OUCH! There was a time when he probably threw them away, but now that he is older I think he appreciates the gift. I’d say we got our money’s worth… and so has he.

I apologize if this is the incorrect venue to ask, but I would really appreciate some info.
My dh and I have decided to homeschool our children next year. One will be second grade and one will be kindergarten. I still need to work about 5 hours a day (I work from my home office and my hours are flexible). To say that I am terrified would be an understatement! I know that I am qualified to teach the material. I actually have a degree in education, but I’m worried that I can’t do it right if I’m not completely focused on school. This decision is part of our much needed debt elimination plan. We have prayed a lot about it and we believe this is what we should do.
Does anyone else work (from home) and homeschool? Am I crazy to think I can do this?

      Hi Looking4info,
I am a stay-at-home single mom who works from home as a freelance writer. My son is only 2 1/2 years old but I have started introducing letters, numbers, shapes and colors. I am preparing us for homeschool in the nearing future.
I find myself working during the night after he goes to bed, and as your hours are flexible I would suggest this–it is nearly impossible to concentrate during the day especially when you are focusing on your children and their education. If your hubby works during the day, consider having dinner ready when he gets home so as soon as you finish eating, you can begin with your second job or at least have a respite before your “night shift” begins.
If you are trying to save money, especially for the kindergarten-age child, look online for free curriculum and resources. Here are some resources for free homeschooling resources:
lesson plans, lessonplanspage.com; language arts curriculum including online texts, progressivephonics.com; homemade board games kellyskindergarten.com; math lessons, mathwire.com.
Check out your local Goodwill. I have bought hundreds of books there for a fraction of what I would have paid retail, including a complete set of the World Book Encylopedia for children.

By the way, we are all crazy whether we send our kids to an institution or not ;) )
