I really dislike crafts. Well, actually I really dislike mess, which often means I dislike homeschool crafts.
My kids are messy crafters and for many years I skipped the craft when I could.
But my kids LOVE crafts. They also remember what they learned when there is a craft involved.
So, if you are like me and tend to skip crafts to avoid the mess, reconsider. For many children, hands-on learning is the best way for them to retain information.
Messes are temporary, a love of learning is forever.

I’m not a huge fan of crafts either, but this is a lesson that I am learning as well. I have even put off creative spelling ideas (i.e. using shaving cream, finger paints, etc.). Well, yesterday to review some spelling patterns I used shortening colored with blue food coloring and my girls had a blast spelling and exclaimed about how much fun it was!!
That’s one of my favorite things about our library’s storytime…they always do a craft at the end. Perfect for me because I don’t have to do the prep work or the clean up! And then every 3 months or so they do a Saturday activity where they pull out all their leftover materials and just let the kids go at it to their hearts’ content!
i love that im not the only one who Dislikes crafts…… esp w/ my son he starts then gets board……. oy!
LOL. The funny thing is, that my degree is in art, my first grown-up job in college was as a craft instructor and that’s what I did for a living for a while: help kids learn to use their hands with crafty things and writing skills. Now that I am a mom, it’s a horror story trying to keep the flying bits of paper under control.
*sigh*
You had to say that…
