I have mentioned a few times that for several years we have celebrated Christmas away from our family. This has always been hard on the grandparents because they can’t see the kids open their gifts.
Well, thanks to technology, we have solved that problem. For many years (when we had dial up internet) we would call the grandparents as the kids were opening their gifts so they could hear their reactions, and the kids could say thank you right away.
For the past few years we have used video chat so the grandparents can watch the kids open presents. This has really made Christmas extra special for our kids and our parents. While it isn’t the same as being there in person it is fun.
The kids are watching their grandparents open gifts.
I would highly recommend coordinating the video chat with your family members before Christmas morning. These programs all require a camera, either an external webcam attached to your computer, or a built in camera on the computer.
Here are a few options for video chatting.
All these options are free, all you need is a camera, computer, and internet connection. If you are looking for a last minute gift idea for far away family a small camera that connects to their computer is a great way to help them stay connected!

We’re doing this for the first time this year, and it will likely become a Christmas tradition. Skype it is at our place!
Great idea! The wonders of technology…
