This year I have tax procrastination. Normally I have my taxes filed by February, but with buying a house and my husband’s travel things are more complicated this year. The sad thing is I’m sure we are getting a refund so I’m just delaying getting my money back! (sigh)
Tax time is also clean out the office time. While we have been fortunate enough to have a home office in our last two homes, we have also used closets, kitchen cabinets, and cubbies to hold our files over the years. Since I use the binder system to organize our files, I try to clean them out once or twice a year. After I decide what needs to be saved and what needs to be tossed it is time to shred the papers.
Being a tightwad I resisted buying a shredder for many years. I couldn’t justify paying $40-$100 for something that cuts paper. Plus I had always heard horror stories about kids sticking their fingers in the shredder. No thank you! So for years I would try to cut up the papers myself, or burn them in the fireplace. It was really quite ridiculous, especially when we moved into a house without a fireplace. I actually tried burning papers in the sink once.
Finally after years of resisting I bought a shredder for my husband for Christmas. I know what you all are thinking… lamest gift ever! But he actually wanted a shredder and was thrilled when he opened his gift! The shredder worked well for about a year and then died. My husband took it apart and tried to fix it, but it was destined for the garbage. My husband was ready to go out an buy another one that day, but I wasn’t so sure. I was upset that it only lasted about a year and wasn’t going to spend any more money until I had done my research.
Of course researching shredders was NOT on the top of my list, so we lived shredderless for a few months until I received an email from a company representing Fellowes P-12C paper shredder
As soon as the shredder arrived my husband got to work. I will say this shredder is loud. I heard what sounded like a 747 taking off in our bathroom and walked in to find my husband happily shredding the past 5 months worth of documents. The shredder has a large holding capacity for the shredded paper and has an automatic shut off if your fingers get near the opening. I even asked my husband to try and put his fingers in the opening to see what would happen and it would not run. The Fellowes P-12C shredder cuts paper into 400 particles with its Cross-Cut technology. Try doing that with a pair of scissors! 
While a little more expensive than some of the other shredders (including the one I owned before) it is a much higher quality. While I cannot tell you how long it will last, I can tell from using it there is a big difference between the Fellowes and less expensive models.
Just in case you are wondering, you should be shredding your documents. There are people out there who go through the garbage looking for information to steal your identity. Spending some money on a shredder is much better than trying to cancel all your credit cards and dealing with identify theft! I am always amazed at how sometimes even junk mail has a significant amount of identifying information on it. When in doubt, shred it! You can always use your shredded papers for garden mulch (flowers only, no vegetables).

Anyway, I’m like you – have a hard time justifying the expense. I tear papers in 1/4s and bring the really crucial ones to work to kindly ask our secretary to shred for me
What a great giveaway! We just cleaned out all of our paperwork and have a HUGE stack sitting there and waiting for us to go buy a shredder. Years ago we bought a really cheap one and it is a pain and doesn’t work great so we have finally decided to bite the bullet and buy a good one. This would really help us out!

Paperwork is the one thing I can’t keep up with. Once I finally do get it all sorted out, it’s sits around waiting to be destroyed. If I don’t handle it fast enough, it inevitably gets mixed in with newer paperwork and needs to be sorted out again. So it really gets out of control sometimes. This shredder would help our little family so much!

I would love a new shredder. Ours isn’t very strong and burns out after 5-8 minutes of shredding. It works, but it is on its last legs.
I’m still a “new” navy wife & completed my first military move about 9 months ago, TN to CA! Whilst moving my husband had boxes & boxes & boxes labeled burn boxes that he always put in storage during his bachelor days (& in the moving truck during the marriage). I asked him why he had years of stuff to burn & why are we hauling it?! We already had OUR box of mail/paperwork to eliminate. His response, “I just haven’t gotten to it between deployments.” So to California the burn boxes came. A few weeks ago I got a deal on a small outdoor firepit & eagerly decided it was time to confront these boxes, it’s literally been raining for two weeks. Outdoor firepits are a great way to decorate & warm up a patio, not such a great idea if it’s your sourse identity protection!

My husband just ordered a shredder to accompany the new scanner (http://www.fujitsu.com/us/services/computing/peripherals/scanners/scansnap/s1100.html) that he got. We’re going digital with all of our filing. It’ll be great to pay the bill, scan it, shred it, and simplify.

I generally burn my papers, but it isn’t always the best option (winter, windy days, etc.). A shredder would be perfect!

I need help in taming this continual mound of incoming mail. I just take all the discarded
mail and put it in paper bags and boxes, store it where ever I can find room and then in
the summer when we have the occasional fire pit, fire – we burn it. I do not like the overwhelming amount of paper mess and the storage of it. We do have a garden so
using the shredded paper as mulch would also be great. A shredder would be a blessing
and a catalysis for me to get more organized in the home office.

yes, please! Our last shredder died after someone *cough, cough* dumped a full glass of water on it. We tried everything to fix it! It was an expensive one bought on super-sale, with a coupon and a gift card at Staples, so it only ended up costing us $30! But now I can’t afford to just go buy a replacement.
I too have resisted buying a shredder. Why would I want to spend $ on something I don’t “HAVE” to have? Ummm. . .maybe because I am tired of tripping over our box of documents that my husband needs to burn. Yet, I still resist! I’ve been meaning to get a shredder for years! I always tears documents with account numbers into strips (separating the string of numbers), and throw the strips in 3 different garbage cans in the house (each of which gets emptied at different times when full).

My husband is our family’s chief paper shredder, but since he’s spent more time in the Middle East with the Army than he has at home the last 3 years I’m afraid that job now falls to me… as do all the others, ahem. I am scared to death that one of our girls will get fingers stuck in the darn thing so I hate to drag ours out and use it. Perfect timing! I’ve been researching shredders this past week and I too am having a hard time forking out the $50 for the cheap model to cut paper that I’m going to recycle! I had a little mini shredder that only cut strips, but that died last year, so I’ve been cutting stuff up myself or just ripping it in pieces if it’s not too sensitive. I would LOVE a new shredder!

We LOVE shredders. My 7 yr old daughter gets a huge kick out of putting the paper in the shredder, but after we get enough paper shredded we actually use it to recycle and make our own paper. It saves us money on buying paper and it is a really fun process (although the drying is kind of long), but we can make different colors with food coloring and, as my daughter says, “We are saving a tree and saving the planet!! We are being useful.”

We burn ours in the wood stove, but I hate waiting till a cold day to do it. A shredder would be fantastic.

Our shredder broke last month and I didn’t realize how expensive they had become. After going through 17 years of military documents recently my husband and I have tons that need to be shredded! This would be a blessing!

I appreciate your informing us about this shredder. Our’s is now on it’s last leg–it’s still working, but not for long, I fear. This will be the second shredder we have gone through! I have been telling my husband we needed to invest in a new one, but your information will make it easier! He says no new one until this one completely dies!!
I’d live to win this! Not sure if it’s to late to enter… We are limping along with our current cheapy shredder. It is stuck in the on position. When you plug it in, it turns on. The only way to turn it off is to unplug it. It doesn’t have the nice finger sensors either. The opening is rather large…I’m always afraid for my own fingers much less my 2 littles in the house. Main reason for coupon cutting is that my daughter at age 20 months has been diagnosed with Celiac disease and food is so expensive.. also found out today that gluten is in shampoo and soap and so on…so difficult to protect your child when you dont know all you have to protect her from… thank you again!!

My shredder seems about ready to die, plus it can only handle one paper at a time which is ridiculously time consuming if you have a lot of shredding to do. I really need to clean out my old files as well so I would love this.

I’ve been really wanting to get one. I had a shredder about 12 years ago, it worked one time then never again. Now with being a mom we can not afford to get one. There are a ton of papers in the basement waiting to be turned into confetti for the kids! : )

Love this giveaway! I especially love the finger shut off feature! Not that I have ever shredded a finger
but we have pets that I get nervous when they are around the shredder (unfortunately I heard a devastating report on the news of what happened to a dog vs shredder).
