Grow Your Blog ~ Why You Must Participate in the UBP 2009!

Ultimate Blog Party 2009

This is another installment in my intermittent series, Grow Your Blog. While I do not consider myself an expert, I often receive questions from readers on how to grow their blogs. This series attempts to share my blogging experience (in terms of growth) over the past year with my readers.

There are tons of blogs out there, and many are excellent but have few readers or comments. One key to growing your blog is persistence. Some of the biggest bloggers out there have been blogging for 4 or 5 years. Even if they only pick up one new reader a day, that is a few thousand readers over time.

Another great way to bring readers to your site is networking, and tonight begins one of the biggest blog networking events of the year. I had only been blogging about a month when I heard about the Ultimate Blog Party 2008. It looked like something fun and there were lots of great prizes so I threw up a blog post and linked up. Little did I know that participating in the UBP would start a snowball of growth for my blog. My stats more than doubled after the UBP and have continued to grow over the past year.

Benefits of participating in the UBP.

  • Increased traffic to your site during the blog party week.
  • Increased exposure, you will have visits from people who have never heard of your blog before.
  • Introducing your blog to advertisers. PR people and small business owners visit blogs during the UBP looking for blogs that would be a good match for their products.
  • Increased networking opportunities, not only did a lot of people find me last year, I found lots of new blogs that I still read today. Reading, commenting, and guest posting on other blogs is a great way to grow your traffic, and is really what blogging is all about anyway.

Creating an interesting and fun post is the best way to turn one time visitors into returning readers.

  • Remember people are trying to visit over a thousand blogs and giveaways, keep your post short and sweet.
  • Give a short description of your blog. Let the readers know what you write about and what they can expect if they become regular readers of your blog.
  • Use photos to tell a story, they are quick to view and will engage the reader.
  • Create a user friendly post. Translation: Formatting, spelling, use of bold and bullets are important. They keep your post easy on the eyes and readers can scan for important points. No one wants to wade through a 27 sentence paragraph, even if you have something worthwhile to say.
  • Use links to direct readers to other interesting parts of your blog.
  • Make sure you leave a link to your feed and your twitter account. People who like what they see will have an easy way to return or follow you.

I cannot wait to visit some new blogs this coming week. Hopefully it will be the start of many new “friendships” and perhaps even a few partnerships.
