Help for Haiti
I am sure by now you have all seen the devastation caused by the earthquake in Haiti. In the past I have always felt helpless, I don’t have the ability to travel or the medical training to provide care. But today, after receiving an email from one of my friends, I realized there is something I can do, and that is pray and give.

Not only can I pray and give, I can encourage and challenge my readers to do the same. I realize not everyone, especially in this economy, has money laying around to give away. But perhaps you have a few dollars? I know many of us are participating in the 730/365 challenge, maybe you could sell a few items on Ebay or Craig’s List and donate that money. Maybe there is something you could give up, just for the rest of the month in order to help these people who are in desperate need of food, shelter, medical care, and clothing.

My friend Crystal from Money Saving Mom is hosting a linky for people to link up with their posts detailing how they are helping the victims of Haiti’s earthquake. For each link she is donating money to Compassion International. Spurred on by her generosity I have a challenge for my readers as well.

For each person who leaves a comment telling me what they have done to help the relief effort, whether it is donating money, time, praying, etc… I will donate $1 to the Earthquake Disaster Relief Fund organized by my church. And for each person that links up with their blog post detailing their relief efforts I will donate an additional dollar, up to a maximum of $500.

If you are looking for organizations that are accepting donations check out:

Sovereign Grace Ministries
Compassion International
Numana
American Red Cross

Every dollar makes a difference.

Thanks for the additional opportunity to help. Our church (Gateway Freewill Baptist) actually had a missions team that landed right before the earthquake struke Tuesday. Much of the early footage on CNN was from one of our ladies. Our family (and church) are in prayer for our people and the people of Haiti. We are currently getting together money and medical supplies for the clinic where our people are serving. My husband (USS Bataan) left yesterday as part of the Navy’s relief effort.

Thanks to you and the other bloggers for putting the need out front. Pls pray that the people in Haiti will see God as He provides healing, comfort, hope and order during this most difficult situation.

Everytime I hear “Haiti”, I offer a prayer for everyone involved. I will be making a monetary donation – just have to decide on the agency, or maybe more than one. I can’t afford a lot, but I’m sure every little bit will help.
Thanks for your effort.

Thank you for being part of this amazing effort! I’ve given one donation already, and I’ll be doing another as part of this terrific effort! It’s events like this that I find really help me put my own life in proper perspective. There is so much pain in the world. Thank you again!

I donated through Compassion International and the Red Cross. Thanks for doing this!

5 Amber January 15, 2010 at 10:03 am

I can’t help but stayed glued to the tv and watch the devastation that is going on over there. All I can do is pray that they are getting the help and care that they need. It is wonderful that you are doing this.

7 Brittan January 15, 2010 at 10:16 am

I’m praying for Haiti and donating via text message and to Feed My Starving Children

9 LaCosta January 15, 2010 at 10:29 am

My daughters and I have been praying frequently for the people of Haiti, not only that the supplies they need would be provided, but that the government would allow the supplies to reach the people who need them the most. I am not able to give financially, so THANK YOU for allowing us a place to “give” through you!

10 jennie January 15, 2010 at 11:03 am

We donated to the US fund for UNICEF and also to a local (Kentucky)-based charity called Ten Kids whose goal is to provide a safe home, education, etc. to Ten Kids http://www.tenkids.org/. I like the idea of giving to an organization meeting general needs of the people of Haiti and to one meeting the needs of specific children. We are so blessed–I can’t imagine the losses of the Haitian people.

Thanks for all you’re doing!!

11 Ashley January 15, 2010 at 11:03 am

We donated to the American Red Cross this morning. Thanks for using your blog to help convince people to donate.

12 Sandy January 15, 2010 at 11:04 am

This is truly a wonderful thing that you are doing! Looking at images of the disaster on TV and on the web are truly devastating. My heart goes out to all that are suffering or have lost loved ones. Thanks again for setting up this effort!

Thank you for your challenge and your generosity! I’m donating through Compassion.

19 Elizabeth January 15, 2010 at 11:54 am

That is a very generous donation plan! Today I am praying for the victims in Haiti.

20 Sharon January 15, 2010 at 11:59 am

We *just* started to sponsor a little girl from Haiti through Compassion International. Our sponsor packet arrived the day the earthquake struck. Her name is Shelove. We do not yet know how she and her family are doing. Compassion International is a great organization. We will be giving through them, and I’d encourage others to, as well. We know a few people involved with their ministry — they are top-notch.

21 Virginia January 15, 2010 at 11:59 am

What a great idea. Thanks for your help and support.

22 Farrah January 15, 2010 at 12:29 pm

23 mandy January 15, 2010 at 12:30 pm

I’m praying for the victims and their families.

24 Kim January 15, 2010 at 12:40 pm

Our family is planning to give. Our church ususally takes up an offering for disasters like this, so we plan to give through our church. They give the money to a missionary or organization they trust to help distribute the money. If our church doesn’t take up an offering, we plan to donate the money through Compassion Int. Thank you for your generous heart.

25 Jaclyn January 15, 2010 at 12:54 pm

We’ve donated and prayed…and prayed. Thank you for what you’re doing.

26 Angie January 15, 2010 at 12:58 pm

We’ve been praying and praying. We have friends who have families as missionaries in Haiti, so not only praying, but also trying to be an encouragement to them, as they wait with NO ANSWERS. Also, passing along the good news we hear. We haven’t decided who we’re giving to yet or how much, but I’m sure there will be a donation headed that direction at some point soon. Thanks for your continued efforts.

27 Jennifer January 15, 2010 at 1:09 pm

What a great way to help, everyone needs to get involved.

28 Elizabeth January 15, 2010 at 1:18 pm

I am praying and after I speak with my hubby will also be donating!

Thanks,
Elizabeth

29 Susie G. January 15, 2010 at 1:38 pm

We donated through Heart to Heart International. I just can’t resist them because they not only operate on an incredibly low overhead of less than 2 percent, they also leverage strategic partnerships and volunteer support to deliver 25 times the value of donations in medical aid – a win-win!

30 Diana January 15, 2010 at 1:39 pm

I am giving through my church to the Southern Baptist Disaster Relief.

31 Pam K January 15, 2010 at 1:50 pm

My heart is breaking for the Haitian people. I pray that the Lord will bless and keep them safe. I have contributed to the American Red Cross and encourage others to do the same.

32 Becky L. January 15, 2010 at 2:18 pm

I’m sending money to World Vision this a.m. It’s a bit we can do for our neighbors in Haiti. My husband told me last night that his company is going to do something to raise money to send to Haiti.

I just read on Facebook about our missionary friends in the Dominican Republic. They are medical missionaries. Gary and son, David and two Haitian men that live there took a ton of medical supplies, including antibiotics, rescue supplies and MREs and they are going to be there til they run out of supplies. Pray for them and for the Cindy and children at home in Mucha Agua. It’s a blessing to know people that are helping in this sad time.

33 Kim January 15, 2010 at 2:25 pm

Thanks for doing this – what a wonderful way to help! We’ve donated to the Red Cross and will be working with our school and local YMCA to gather some medical supplies to send as well.

38 Alicia January 15, 2010 at 3:09 pm

Praying! And also trying to decide where to give.

39 Upstatemomof3 January 15, 2010 at 3:14 pm

Well I linked my post. I am not sure it details exactly what I have been doing. It asks for help and for people who can help get the children home. I have contacted senators and asked for their help for these poor families and children.

40 Sarah January 15, 2010 at 3:31 pm

Thank you for doing this donation project! I’ve donated money to MercyCorps, which is my regular charity I support for work they do all around the world. They are a great reputable organization. Other than that, all we can do is pray pray and pray some more for our brothers and sisters. I pray especially that in the midst of all this chaos, they may have hope instead of fear.

41 Lucy January 15, 2010 at 3:34 pm

We’re giving to Compassion International. I’ve also heard good things about Cure, so we’ll be looking into that. Thanks for doing this!

42 Melissa January 15, 2010 at 3:36 pm

We’re donating to CRS. Our kids are doing extra chores to earn money to put in the second collection basket at church that is for Haiti.

43 Robyn January 15, 2010 at 3:38 pm

I donated to Catholic Relief Services which will go directly to Haiti, and my son is going to donate the charity portion of his allowance to Haiti.
You’re doing a great thing!

44 Jenn @ Beautiful Calling January 15, 2010 at 3:43 pm

Our family is sending up prayers to the One who can do the most!!
Our church also took and sent contributions in.
My heart breaks especially for the little ones affected. We truly are blessed and I am thankful that we are able to bless others in return!

Thanks for pulling together the links and doing the leg work.
