Had a Moment

January 31, 2009 · 55 comments

This probably does not happen to first time moms, but someone with lots of kids please tell me this is common. This week I had one of those light bulb, oh we are going to have a baby moments. With less than 12 weeks left we have done nothing, nada, zilch, zip, to prepare for the baby. No name, no baby items pulled from storage, we aren’t even sure where she is going to sleep. I still haven’t registered at the hospital and haven’t made the cloth vs disposable diaper decision. Oh, and we don’t have a vehicle that will fit our entire family once the baby is born.

This week I started thinking, perhaps we should do something! It isn’t that we aren’t excited about our newest addition, we are, but life is busy around here. Aside from some very annoying leg cramps I usually forget I am pregnant until someone else reminds me or asks how I am feeling.

Lists are a favorite of mine, so perhaps making a baby “to do” list would help? The first item on the list can be name the baby. Do you all want to help with this one? We are truly stumped for a name this time around and I wouldn’t mind hearing your suggestions.

A few guidelines for those who want to contribute; we have a common last name so we like names that are a little uncommon, but not made up. Although we are not opposed to a great common name either, we are running out of choices. The name has to mean something, and of course we have to like it! The last one will be the toughest as my husband can figure out a way to make fun of any name. If you are related to me you can leave your suggestions too, just don’t get upset if we don’t use them.

Had a Moment

Afterthought: Do not suggest the following names as they have already been suggested by my children:

  • Tinker Bell
  • Science
  • Lysol
  • Share/Bookmark

Oh, dear! I can’t believe having kids has become that commonplace for you, lol. I’ve got more time left than you do (I’m not due until July), but I haven’t done anything, wither. And we actually have to buy stuff, since we didn’t think we were gonna have another, and got rid of a lot. I’m afraid I have no name suggestions.

My Aunt’s name is Susan no middle name cuz she was the 8th child and they were tired, this is what they told her lol. I love your children’s suggestions, a friend of mine told her daughter she could help name the baby so she “named” her little sister Kayla (the babysitters dog’s name) booger butt XX(last name) yet she was confused as to why mom didn’t use it. lol Do you have any favorite tv show characters or favorite biblical people?? that would be a good story as to how they got their name. I like the following
Girl: Lexie, Madeline, Sara Elizabeth, Katerina (Kat for short), Farah, Natalie
Boy: Aiden, Talon, Scotty, Cole, Cameron, Seth, Brandon, Michale, Preston, Landon

Good luck finding/picking a name, if it’s one of mine please share!!! lol

How about Gwenda or Siobhan or Rosalie. You could also go for old-fashioned names like Elizabeth, Eleanor (Ellie!) or Pearl.

Congrats!

Ok so my daughter’s name is Carson and alot of people like it. My other daughter I wanted to name Hayden but my DH nixed it. It was his turn to name one so he named her after our moms. Her name is Rebecca Chizuko. Rebecca means bound for and Chizuko is a herron in Japeneese which means longevity. So she’s bound for longevity. She wasn’t named till right after she was born. My husband was debating over Rebecca or Rachel but it was funny how it worked out. we call her Becca as my mom is Becky. Carson’s middle name is Danielle and she’s named after my brother’s daughter that passed away. Hope you like them. Oh try not to be too cute. My name is Angel Love and I hate it.

My personal favorite is Abigail! I think older names are better. Sarah, Hope, Grace, Helen(a), Rebecca, Phillipa, Emma, Anna, Olivia, Joseph, Jonathan, Nathanial, Jacob, Aaron. However, I’ve come across a lot of newwer names that I really like….Reese (either), Zoe, Nayeli, Peyton (either!). Or, older but odder names are coming back. Oscar, Mario, Leonardo, etc. Just don’t go trendy! There are too many Kendyl, Braden, and Coltons already! (I teach kinder…we have 8 Bradens and 5 Coltons this year!!)

When I was seven months along with our youngest, I got to thinking that perhaps we should start getting ready for him and picking a name, etc.

That night I went into labor and I panicked all the way to the hospital wondering where he’d sleep, what we’d name him, etc. Fortunately they were able to stop the labor but I went into it three more times and had to go to the hospital to have it stopped.

If you can believe it, when he was finally born we still hadn’t for sure selected his name yet. (Poor kid, 15 years old and still doesn’t have a name, lol!)

Girl’s names: I like Kayleigha (pronounced Kay-lee-ah or you could spell it Kaylea or Kaleigha), Shayla (it’s from the name Shay but I can’t remember what it means), Ciara (C-R-Uh), Hope, Faith, Reagan. I also like the name McKenzie.

When choosing our kids names we always looked at the meanings behind them. We also liked old names that were not too different that people had no clue how to spell them, but yet, also not so popular that it was a “top ten” name. Oh, and we have a one syllable last name so it had to be at least two syllables (nicknames included)- my husband’s rule. Funny thing though, when we chose the names, they were not “top ten”, but wouldn’t you know it – they tended to show up that year!

Anyway, our kids names are Ryan (little king), Abby (Abigail – fathers joy) and Caleb (bold). I always joked that we needed to find a name that meant “quiet, compliant, peacemaker” :) Other names on my list were: Lily, Audrey, Naomi, Elias, Silas, and Josiah.

I have a friend that named her daughter Emma Leigh. If you say it together it sounds like Emily. She said they figured this way they’ve gave their daughter three choices for names later in life. You know for those teenage years when girls want to be called something different than what we parents call them. lol I thought it was a cute twist on a name.

There are so many beautiful girls names. My favorite was always Sabrina and my DH said all he could hear was “Sabrina the teenage witch”. Yes he’s like your DH…any name I gave him he found a way to make fun of it. Naming our children was hard work! :)

Could you give us some more “rules” to go by? Like is there a certain letter you don’t want or maybe you don’t like names that have nicknames?

Hugs,
Melissa

My SIL is due with their seventh baby in just 2 weeks and they just started getting ready about a week ago! This isn’t uncommon for them, though. They never find out the baby’s sex ahead of time, so they never have a name chosen ahead of time. In fact, their fifth child was 5 months old before his name was official (Warren Theodore Ezekiel)! The shortest length of time it took them to choose a name was with their first and that took 3 days. It’s my brother’s fault; he refuses to come up with a list until the baby is here and he can see him/her.

I, on the other hand, love picking baby names! They’ve used one of my names (Aurora Noelle) but rejected the rest. Here are some of my other baby girl suggestions:

Penelope
Violet
Regan
Eleanor (Ellie or Nora)
Cordelia (Delia)

Their daughter’s names are:
Genevieve Dawn
Nova Elizabeth (called Elizabeth)
Aurora Noelle
Kimanah Sarah Rozena (called Sarah)

Good luck!

I am so glad to hear I am not the only one who’s husband makes fun of the names that I pick! I just found out we are expecting #5 come the end of Sept. I have 4 girls already, so the probablity of having babu girl #5 is really big, but there is always that chance that the little boy will slip through. I will share my list of names that I have so far. We all have “M” middle names so if the baby is a girl, Malia, and boy Micah.

Girls:
Sailor: Love this name but my husband says N-O!
Justice
Aspen
Reign
Dakota
Harper
Satchel
Ember

Boys:
Urban
Legend
Asher
Chancellor
Dakota
Cherokee
Tate
Hale

Hope this helps!

When we were pregnant with our first, my husband insisted on finding a name “rich with meaning.” I poured over baby names book, coming up with a list of names I liked, with suitable meanings. My husband, however, had something much deeper in mind. He proposed “Mara Joy.” Mara means “bitter,” so at first I was perplexed. But the name contrasts the bitterness that we often find in earthly life, with the transcendent joy in it all when we know Christ. . . He wrote a letter to our daughter explaining it:

Too. funny. We have a very, very common last name as well and I have joked that if we had another boy we would name him “Sven”. But I seriously love that name. I wish I had held my own in naming my daughter, “Analyn”, which my husband would not okay. I guess I made it up, but it was combining my grandmother’s name (Anna) and mine (Jolyn) and I still love it as well.
And my husband absolutely ruins every name by making fun of it, too.
I still love my own kids’ names: Conner; Olivia and Sean-Peter. Though the youngest now insists, “My name is just Peter”. Interestingly, Peter did not even make the top 100 boys’ names for last year so that makes me happy.

I have 6 kids and we didn’t get a vehicle that would hold all of us until 6 months after number 6 arrived. In the mean time I had my oldest child ride in the passenger seat and take 2 cars the few occasions we all needed to go someplace. Not ideal but we shopped around a lot for 12 passenger vans and wound up getting an almost new one at about half the sticker price. That was last summer when gas prices were so high.

And I totally get the not doing anything. With my fifth and sixth I bought 1 going home outfit while pregnant and not much else. It wasn’t really intentional but that due date seemed to arrive quickly.

Hi! I just found your site via organizing junkie’s site, and I love it! I have bookmarked it and plan on visiting regularly. My husband is military also and is currently deployed–Navy. I am going to guess that your husband is Navy too? We were stationed in VA about 7 years ago, and we are now getting ready to move to Florida from Maine in about 3 months.
I am expecting also, our 6th, in April; our second boy (my only son so far is ecstatic!)
I don’t have any suggestions for names because that’s an area that my husband and I have to think on for a long time–it seems difficult for us to find that perfect name! Well, actually, we take a lot of time and prayer and the name usually comes to us. God will give you the perfect name!
Take care and God bless!

Hi. Love the site.

Your post had me laughing. We just had our 7th in December and our story was the same: no names, no baby stuff out, vehicle too small. Life with 6 kids is BUSY.

Fortunately, he was a week late so we had a name before he was born, and I DID get to the clothes and bassinette. However, we still need to do something about the vehicle. We’re hoping to change out the front passenger seat for a double one so we can all travel together.

I’m sure you’ll pull it together in the nick of time. And if you don’t, you’ll work it out.

Blessings to you for your upcoming birth.

In Him

I’ve always liked the names:

Isabella or Isabel: consecrated To God
Alexandra: Protector Of Mankind
Emma: Universal
Avery: Nobility

My favorite middle names (although you didn’t ask) are Marie and Rose.

I ended up with twin boys and didn’t choose names until 5 days after they were born. Good luck on that “to do” list…

I had my third child 6 weeks ago…& I swear I was the same – it was like I kept forgetting I was pregnant…well, not forgetting as such but it never featured very prominently in my day-to-day thinking, just because I was so busy (& didn’t have any niggly pregnancy symptoms to bring me back to reality).

As for names…we’ve waited until after bubs is born with both our last two (my first one’s name was chosen before she was born). We wanted to see what would “fit” with our babies. There are lots of names I like…but not all of them “fit” our children – they simply weren’t any of those names once they were born, if that makes sense?

And, if you like, I’ll let you have my husband’s (helpful) choice for both our last two – Popeye. It was the only thing he’d contribute when we were talking about names. We didn’t end up using it ;)

I tend to like classic names and not trendy names (too many kids have been named for soap opera characters or after celebrities’ children!). As others have stated, Elizabeth, Grace, or Katherine are always good. You can call girls with those names Kit, Kate, Katie, Gracie, Liza, Betsy, etc. My younger son is named Samuel Rhett and goes by Rhett. We didn’t think we’d have another child, due to my late husband’s car accident injuries, and Rhett was conceived four months after the horrible accident. Samuel means “gift of God.” It was also my husband’s grandfather’s name. I’m a huge GWTW fan; and with roots in Atlanta, we chose Rhett as his other name. It’s Welsh and means “enthusiastic.”

38 Joelle February 1, 2009 at 2:02 pm

Hmm, let’s see. Sounds like you’re having a girl (because you said “she” above.) So here are some (not-so-common) names for consideration…
“Audra” meaning “noble strength”
“Adelaide” meaning “of noble kin”
“Arianna” meaning “very holy”
Um, you could always do “Joelle” – it’s very uncommon (I’ve only met 2 or 3 in my lifetime) – and is the feminine form of Joel. (The pronunciation gets slaughtered but it rhymes with Noel).
“Karah” is pretty – it means “dear”
“Kaya” is nice – it means “pure”
I like “Madeline” or “Madelyn” – meaning Woman of Magdala.
Anyways. I want a little girl someday (well, a little boy would do too!) but I frequently play the name-game in my head so here are some options. ;-)
