Give Your Article a Great Title

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is important when writing posts, and it starts with a great title. While cute and funny titles are… cute and funny, Google doesn’t have a sense of humor.

Make sure your title describes your post well and contains key words.  It is helpful to think of what you might enter in a search bar if you were looking for similar information.

Here are a few examples:

  • Title: El Cheapo Laundry Room Re-Do
  • Better Title:  Inexpensive DIY Laundry Room Makeover
While “cheap” might be used in a search, “El cheapo” would probably not be.  ”DIY” is a commonly used acronym that people might search for, and “makeover” is more likely to be used than “re-do” thanks to makeover television shows.

  • Title: Delicious Melt-In-Your-Mouth Breakfast Goodness
  • Better Title: Bread Machine Cinnamon Roll Recipe
While “melt-in-your-mouth” might get a reader’s attention, people don’t bother to type that into a search bar.  They are searching for something specific–not just a cinnamon roll recipe, but one they can make with their bread machine.

  • Title: Best Curriculum Ever!
  • Better Title: Kindergarten Math Curriculum Recommendations
“Curriculum” is a key word that you want to keep, but if your post is specific to kindergarten math curriculum, put that in the title.
