This is a small money saving tip, but small tips can add up to big savings.
Some produce is sold by the pound like apples, potatoes, oranges, grapes or bananas
Some produce is sold by the piece like kiwis, mangos, pineapples, cantaloupes, or pineapples
When purchasing produce by the piece select the biggest and heaviest fruit in the bunch. You will get more for you money.

Good tip and not just for produce by the piece but also when buying produce sold by the bag. Weigh the bag and buy the bag that weighs the most – don’t assume that a five pound bag will weigh exactly five pounds.
Natalie,
You are right. In fact by law, bagged produce must weigh the stated weight or more, so most bagged produce weighs about 1/4 more than the stated weight. It is a better deal to buy bagged produce than produce by the pound that you bag yourself.
I usually do this with potatoes, but apples seem to not be a good when they are bagged.
Toni
I saw on tv not to long ago to weigh your 5lb. or 10lb. bag of potatos. They are sometimes more or less in weight, find more bang for your buck!!!
Exactly! That is what I do, and everyone in the store looks at me like I am crazy!
Hi there! I am dropping in from Frugal Friday.
I enjoyed your post. I am that crazy lady at the store who weighs the marked 5 and 10 pound bags of produce too! I am also the lady who is weighing all the canteloupes! LOL

wow, it never occurred to me to weigh my bags of apples or potatoes… good tip!
Something else I found out recently was not all stores sell with the same standard. A big example was bell peppers, more stores sell them per piece, but one chain sells them by the pound and it was a significant savings to buy the organic bell pepper at the price per pound!
Great post! I have gotten bigger by looks but I haven’t tried the bagged kind to weight. I’m going to have to try that.
Another tip is to buy seasonally. In the winter, strawberries are about $4.99 for a quart, but now their coming down to $1.99.
