Prolong the Life of Your Razor

This frugal tips come from my brother, who has tested this tip and assures me it works. Apparently razors dull because the moisture from the shower causes microscopic rust to form on the blade before you can even see it. By the time you can see the rust the razor is pretty useless and must be thrown out.

To make razors, even the cheap ones,  last up to a year, dry them off after each use and store them in a dry place until the next use. My brother stores his razor in the sock drawer.

I am usually able to get razors for next to nothing at CVS, but it would be nice to have them last a year or more!

The problem with keeping them in the sock drawer is that I would never remember to take it out when I needed it and then I would be sneaking to my dresser all wet and naked to retrieve the razor. That would not be pretty!

  2. I second MNKristy’s comment. I wonder if folding it in a dry washcloth and putting it in the bathroom drawer would work just as well? d

  3. Great tip! I will give that a shot.

I think wrapped in a washcloth would work fine :)

  5. apparently the other thing you can do is pour some oil into a small jar and store the blade end completely submersed in oil between uses. i have yet to try it myself (keep forgetting) but apparently it works the same wonders–and could be a lot more convenient if you keep the jar in the bathroom in easy access and/or sight!

My husband heard of this about a year ago and I started doing it the next time I replaced my razor. It really does work! I just dry the blades off with my towel after my shower and I leave it in the shower (right now I have a razor that has a hanging unit but with my last razor I just left it blades side up so it didn’t touch the wet surface). I’m on only my 3rd razor since a year ago!

Great idea. I like the dry wash cloth wrap even better. The really great news is and I get this from my 86 yo Mother, after a certain age you start losing your body hair and you don’t have to shave!!! Benefits of getting old! Hopefully I’m almost there:)

  8. That is very interesting. I know I would totally forget to grab it and I use mine daily but I think I will try a variation — drying it and placing it in a ziploc and sealing it up! Thank you for the tip! I have tons of free razors but even then I don’t like to waste them!

  9. I had never heard that but I’ll try it. With the price of razor blades going up so much, I’ll try most anything to make those things last. Tell your brother to keep more of those types of frugal tips coming! lol

  10. Clyman says:

Did anyone think that maybe cutting through hair would be the real cause of it getting dull?

  11. Emily E. says:

I discovered that if I kept the razor dry in between uses, that I also have significantly less irritation after I shave. It’s a HUGE difference. All I do is mount the razor-holder-thingy outside of the shower curtain. Works great!

  12. Sheri says:

I will have to try this. I have always wondered why they seem to get dull so fast . . . it seems like I could go a long while without using one (don’t ask- we have long winters here in Minnesota. Ok, just kidding, that would be gross!) and it would go dull all on its own.
Thanks for the tip ! :)

  13. Bobbi Janay says:

I like this idea I will have to try it.

  14. jen says:

And I thought it needed replacing as often as it does because of the hair. Thanks for the tip.

  15. Somebody's Mimi says:

I shared this razor tip with my dh. He responded, “I bought my razor at a garage sale about 2 years ago and had a tetanus shot about three years ago so I guess I’m good for awhile.” Now that’s pretty frugal.

I love your blog. It is the only one I have sent to by email! I’m really looking forward to next installment of the early days!

  17. Sara says:

I have always used this method (water + metal = rust). I dry off the blade and put it in my bedroom. However, the blade still gets dull after dozens of uses. Just like any knife. (My two cents.)

  18. Sherry says:

I’m definitely going to have to try this. :D

  19. Amy in Oz says:

Just a note on frugal-ness and disposable razors:
Gilette who invented the first disposable razor did so to make a product that people would have to keep buying (eternal consumers) rather than buy one shaving knife and keep sharpening it… food for thought!!
