It is so true that you never miss the money if you take it out first. We set aside money for insurance payments.

For vacations it usually takes us about four years to save up so this one takes us a little longer but it's worth it!

The points suggested by you are true. Automatic payment is always helpful.

Thanks for your website. We decided this year we didn't want to rely on credit cards even though we keep them paid off. So we are trying to get a budget going. We seem to have the obvious worked out but are trying to work out what to do with the little stuff we spend money on. We have a misc. amount set up but it seems like some paychecks are going to have more misc. stuff then others. I think I am making this harder than it is.

I use the same automated system for my giving/tithing fund. Before, I knew each month what portion I should give to helping others. But after I paid the bills and encountered an Ann Taylor sale, I couldn't find the money that I had mentally set aside to give. Now I have a % of my paycheck automatically routed to a separate "giving" checking account. This way it allows me to support missionaries monthly, while also building up funds so that I can give large one-time gifts.

1st, I LOVE reading your blog! :-)

You are so right about auto pay...and auto savings is paying yourself, right?

What an awesome idea! I have started the cash envelope system as well- just started this pay check. It's a weird feeling to pay with cash.

The automatic payment is a great idea. I never thought about doing it for savings. Thanks!
