Okay, don’t expect a frugal holiday tip every day, but “Frugal Holiday Tip of the Day” sounds better than “Randomly Posted Frugal Holiday Tip.” Ah, but I digress, my frugal tip is make breakfast for dinner. I know that for our family, the month of December is crazy with extra activities. We always have to say no to some, but even with our thinned out schedule it seems like we are on the go nonstop.
This is a time when the budget can snowball out of control. For example yesterday, I went to a cookie exchange with my oldest. We returned home, with friends in tow, just in time to head out the door to a holiday concert. There wasn’t time to make dinner before the concert and I was tempted to drive through somewhere for a quick snack. I almost suggested this idea to my husband and then the word “cereal” popped in my head. I asked my husband to make up baggies of cereal for the kids to take to the concert to snack on until we returned and I could make dinner. This worked perfectly, my kids snacked on cereal throughout the concert and we were able to eat a late dinner when we returned.
Many nights there isn’t time to make the planned meal. Breakfast for dinner is inexpensive, quick, and easy. There are also many options and most of us have the ingredients in our pantry already. Here are some ideas
- Cereal
- Pancakes
- Waffles
- French Toast
- Oatmeal
- Biscuits
- Cinnamon Rolls
- Eggs
I know there are some whose husband’s do not like breakfast for dinner because there is no meat. You can remedy this by keeping a pack of bacon or sausage in the freezer for emergency meals. Also remember, the point of this meal is to avoid paying the high cost of eating out, not necessarily to prepare a 5 star meal. Although in my house breakfast for dinner is preferred by everyone.
If you are concerned about the nutritional value of breakfast for dinner add some fruit to your meal and you will beat a fast food dinner any day!
