Does Free Shipping Convince You to Buy?

Free Shipping! No Minimun! Are those words music to your ears? They are to mine.

Whenever we stopped using credit cards I held on to one credit card, the L.L. Bean card. The reason I kept it, free shipping. I love L.L. Bean and if you shop the sales you can find some pretty great deals. For years they offered extra discounts and free shipping to L.L. Bean credit card holders.

I finally got rid of the card eventually but it made me realize how much I love free shipping.

Recently L.L. Bean announced they were offering free shipping every day, no minimums, no expiration date. I couldn’t help but think this was a brilliant marketing move. I prefer to shop online (with seven kids, it’s just easier) and free shipping is usually the deciding factor between two stores with similar products.

Are you more likely to shop from a company that offers free shipping? I think it is just a matter of time before other companies follow L.L. Bean’s example and start offering free shipping on any size order.

Yes! I usually won’t buy unless it’s free shipping… or if the product price is SO LOW that the shipping costs included makes it still less than buying in person. It’s not convenient enough if I have to pay extra to have it shipped. The worse thing is when the shipping costs are more than than the product in the first place. I would LOVE it if more stores caught on and offered free shipping to get more sales!

I am definitely more likely to shop somewhere online if I can get free shipping. It makes life easier to know I don’t have to drive all over town looking for a particular item. I even have Amazon Prime for that same reason. You can’t beat free two day shipping even if you have to pay an annual fee for it. I figure I am saving the money on gas and shipping charges by using the service and I have shared it with my family so they get the same benefit. This is particularly great around Christmas when I have to ship gifts to family out of state. I will usually look to see if I can get something through Prime before I will order it anywhere else.

Absolutely! If I have to pay $10 or more to get something shipped, I much rather go to the store and get it myself. Especially if it’s a $20 item or less. It’s a brilliant move. I actually was going to order jeans from them. But by the time I added shipping, the mall had a much better deal.

I agree, free shipping will definitely persuade me. I’ve always been surprised that more retailers don’t offer free shipping but I guees mega stores like Wally world and Target figure their prices are low enough as is they don’t need to offer it. Thx for the info on LL Bean, I didn’t know that. I love the quality of their clothes so I’ll certainly be checking out their site. Oh and btw… love, love your blog!

I also like the free ‘ship to store’ option many stores offer. I have 4 children total, and 3 under 3yrs old, so even a typical trip to the grocery store leaves me worn out. If i’m considering a larger purchase from our super store, I can get it online, then simply pick it up when i’m doing my weekly shopping.

i agree shopping online is so much easier than running out to the store – especially if they are having good sales…but free shipping makes me want to shop online even more! smart move on their part!

  7. I hate paying for shipping, so free shipping makes me more likely to buy.

  8. Kristen says:

For sure! It almost MAKES me want to shop… That’s probobly bad to say huh? :)

And let’s not forget LL Beans lifetime guarantee:) With 4 girls to go through that comes in VERY handy

  10. Sunnie says:

I dont, and I dont buy it if it on sale, mostly. Unless I have enough swagbucks through Amazon then I might, but otherwise no.

  11. Free shipping is definitely a factor in getting me to buy from a company. I hate finding a great sale on something and then paying an arm and a leg on shipping. Totally undoes a bargain!

My Amazon Prime membership is dangerous.

  12. Merrilee says:

I am loving Amazon Mom with the free Prime membership.
We live in a small town. I always go to Amazon first to look for what I need, and even narrow my search to look for only items eligible for Prime. I rarely do much internet shopping where I pay for shipping now.

  13. Though it’s not always a done deal, free shipping is definitely enticing! More often, I’m actually turned OFF a deal because of expensive shipping. If I’m willing to wait for a package to ship to my front door, I’d opt for the free shipping choice. If my patience is wearing thin though, a quick trip to the store is just fine by me.

  14. Diane says:

Yes. Free shipping definitely motivates me. I do alot of my shopping on amazon.com, because not only do they offer free shipping for a lot of their items, I don’t have to pay sales tax. I doubt that many companies will follow suit, because in reality, shipping is NOT free. Neither UPS, Fedex or the USPS provide free shipping, so these companies somehow have to pay for shipping and packaging. I’m guessing they will have to raise their prices somehow to accommodate for so called “free shipping”.

  15. My Boaz's Ruth says:

I won’t buy just BECAUSE a store has free shipping.

But NOT having free shipping has made me second guess buying some stuff and putting it back on the “shelves” instead.

  16. Lesley says:

I buy from amazon with free shipping from the amazon mom program plus the subscribe n save offers great discounts without having to clip coupons. They’ve made a lot of money off me over the past few years!
