Budget Buster: Procrastination

Do you procrastinate? I’m not a procrastinator by nature, but occasionally I do put things off, like last week when I put off buying toilet paper.

My husband mentioned to me that we were running low on toilet paper, and in a house with nine people that is kind of a big deal. I usually have several rolls stashed in each bathroom so I assumed we had more than he said we did.

My planned shopping trip was still several days away so I figured we could make it stretch until I could stock up at the store.

A few days later one of the kids mentioned they were totally out of toilet paper in their bathroom.

Then another kid said they were out of toilet paper. I knew we couldn’t make the toilet paper stretch for another two or three days, but maybe until the next morning when I had a chance to look through my coupons?

Then that evening I posted this on Facebook.

Ten sheets of toilet paper and eight people that don’t wear diapers do not make for a good combination! My husband had to make a late night run to buy toilet paper. Fortunately Walgreens was still open, and they were having a sale, but it was still more than I normally pay for toilet paper.

I was irritated with myself that I had put off buying toilet paper.

It got me thinking how procrastinating can be a big budget buster! Missing early bird discounts, paying late fees, and even missing out on sales for planned purchases due to procrastinating is unnecessary.

Has procrastinating ever cost you extra money?

For a while last year, I thought that our local library might have to rename a wing for our family, given that we seemed to be fully funding the children’s department with our late fees =) We’re doing much better now, I’m happy to say– very thankful for email reminders that the books are due!

This happened to me yesterday, not with tp but with some great coupon cards (BOGO) for Yankee Candles. I had planned to buy them a few weeks ago and kept putting it off and puttig in off. When I went to use them yesterday, they had already expired! :( :( :( I LOVE Yankee Candles.

Since my 15 month old son was born I have been terrible at couponing. My daughter was a champ when it came to shopping. DS not so much. He gets fussy and cranky (the only time he ever is!) and now DD is not a very good shopper either. So i like to go alone…which doesn’t happen very often. So not many good deals for me. I went from saving 15,000 in coupons in 2009 to 11,000 in 2010 and i am down to not even 4,000 this year!!! I AM STINKING it UP in the savings department! LOL but the crack down due to that HORRID show has not helped any of us save as much as we are used to. :(

Amen to that Danielle. I have used coupons for over 15 years (high school) and since that show came on I have been using less and less in coupons because there are so few coupons out there now.

Don’t forget the extra gas your husband spent on the unplanned trip!
That has happened to us too. Last week, we had to make a special trip for dog food 2 hours before leaving on an out-of-town trip. Even worse, we had to buy from a much more expensive source than usual. The mistake cost us an extra $9 on the price tag plus $4 in gas. Ugh!

Yes, although that is hard to measure since we could walk to Walgreens. :)

Well i am glad i am not the only one then….it stinks!!!

  9. Oh goodness…this happens to me all the time. If I put off doing ANYTHING, it ends up not happening now that baby girl has come. I can’t seem to get caught up and stay caught up now that we have four kiddos. :o ) If I procrastinate in anything having to do with meals, they don’t get done and I end up running through a drive thru. Not good. And very much not like the typical penny pinch- er Lu. We’re getting better now that the babe is 3 mos. but its still not back to the way it was before a few months back.

This is the bad thing about having a stockpile. You think oh I have a TON of xyz item and the next thing you know your out of something! This happened to us with aluminum foil (thankfully walgreens had some on sale finally)
