In all seriousness we laugh because we know the truth! There are millions of people who are still holding on to the “buy now, pay later” philosophy.
In our family we discuss big ticket items we want to purchase, at the beginning of the year. We then allocate money in the budget (if there is leftover money) to purchase these items. After saving we don’t end up purchasing every item because sometimes we decide they just aren’t worth the money.
Last month I asked my very frugal brother-in-law how he came to be so frugal. He explained to me that since he was young he viewed items in terms of how many work hours they would cost. When you realize that dinner out might cost you three hours of work, dinner at home starts sounding better.
Consider the cost before you purchase something and only purchase it if you have the funds allocated for this item. Buying on credit or on a future paycheck (or raise) will cost you in the long run.

OMG, that was hilarious. And the sad thing is that most Americans wouldn’t get that concept either! I think this is why we didn’t hear the uproarious laughter and applause I was expecting from the crowd.

My mom taught me to look at things as how many hours it would take me to earn it. So when I was making a $5.15 an hour at McDonalds in high school, I become REALLY frugal. I try to get my husband to look at things that way but he just doesn’t care that it takes him 30 minutes to earn lunch with his buddies.
I had a colleague whose mother was a hairdresser. She described every non-essential purchase in terms of “heads” – as in haircuts/styles. I’ve never forgotten that creative way of demonstrating that money really does have to be earned!
OK..the skit was just too funny….but a bit sad when you consider the element of truth to it! I’ve done a spending freexe before – for 30 days. Didn’t buy ANYTHING unless it was a neccesity – I wanted to see if I could do it. I did it, but it was quite hard…
I love that skit too. I consider purchases in how many hours my husband has to work, thus being away from me and the kids. I consider, ” Do I really want him to have to spend an extra hour at work, or an extra hour at home… Hmmmm. the choice is easy.

LOL! Funny clip!! It is so easy to get caught up in “keeping up with the Joneses” especially with all the commercials, ads in magazines, etc. Thankfully, we are both doing better in this dept. Thanks for the great link! She has some great ideas!
