Scavenger Hunt

I just returned from a four day trip so my tip is a quick one today. If you want to make a short term dent in your grocery budget, clean out your pantry, fridge, and freezer. I cleaned mine out last week and was able to find enough food for an entire week of meals. I will only need to purchase milk, eggs, butter, cheese and a few side items this week at the grocery store. This will cut my bill in half if not more.

At the end of the week when my fridge and pantry are almost bare, it will be a great opportunity for me to make an inventory sheet for these areas. Then I will know when I need to stock up on items, saving me even more money in the long run.

I did this all last month and only had to buy the bare essentials….it was really amazing!!! I’m going to dread when I have to start buying store bought eggs once our chickens quit laying……maybe they’ll be super chickens and give us some during the winter….tee hee.

This is a great tip. I just started doing this every two weeks. (Right before we get paid!) I’m usually surprised at what I find and what I still have in there!!!

Thanks for the reminder!! I need to stay diligent to this!!

    Thanks for sharing,
    Robyn

  6. Will try but I can say not looking foward to it:)

I need to do this too…and then stock up on what I really need instead of buying duplicates.

  8. Toni,
Thank you for visiting my blog. My biggest problem with my meal planning is I love to cook! I don’t just want to feed my family food to fill their bellies. The food has to be good, it has to sound good, look good and smell good to me. If these aren’t in the equation then I can’t eat it. I really have to be in the mood for what I make, so I am constantly changing my menu even though I try so hard to stick with it. Any ideas to help this problem ? Hugs, Bobbi Jo

It’s amazing to me what we feel is necessary to our purchases, then gets shoved aside, lol! There are always many, many meals waiting for us to notice them in our pantries. I will be gutting mine soon and taking inventory; I hate a messy one at the holidays.

    Thanks for reminding me!
    Have a lovely day~

Great reminder! I so need to clean out my own pantry hold. But the thought of hanging upside down with all those cans piled around my feet just seems overwhelming lately.

  11. I have been putting off cleaning out my freezer (I have a chest freezer), but using the food to cut my grocery bill will be a good motivation. Thanks.

    Are U for hire?
Wonder what U could find in my fridge?!?!? :-)

This is a great tip. I’m living off remnants this week ,trying to postpone the shopping trip because of so many errands!

It really bums me out to go shopping and realize that I’ve pushed something to the back of the fridge and it went bad.
