A while ago I was given the Basic Cake Decorating Video by Teaching Good Things. I love this video. One thing that I have found over the past few years is that it is usually cheaper to teach yourself a skill than to pay someone to do it for you.
For many years I ordered all my children’s cakes at the grocery store. I didn’t think I had the skills to make a good enough cake on my own. Over time, and after watching a few good friends decorate birthday cakes I realized this was something I could do with a little practice. This year I got serious about my cake decorating and attempted castle, Barbie, and Star Wars cakes. I thought about taking a class, but I didn’t have the time.
This Cake Decorating DVD is a decorating class in your own home. Kathy takes you through every step of the cake decorating process and includes many helpful tips along the way. One thing I really loved about the video is that she explains the numerous frosting tips, what designs they make, and how to use one tip to make a variety of designs. She makes it look so easy!
After watching the video I was ready to bake a cake and start practicing. Although Kathy recommends practicing using tips on parchment paper, which is probably a better idea.
The Teaching Good Things website sells several “how to” videos and books, including crochet, bread baking and more. I encourage you to visit the site and see what they have to offer.
Kathy was kind enough to offer a Cake Decorating Video for one of my readers. You definitely want to enter this contest as the savings potential is incredible. I know that I can bake and frost a cake for about five dollars, the cheapest cakes at Costco are around $16. So I am saving $10 each birthday! I am not even going to try and figure out what that would be for nine people and all our birthdays over the years, but I am sure it is a lot of money! Plus cake decorating is a fun activity to do with your kids. My nine year old helped with his Star Wars cake a few months ago and he is still telling me how much he liked it!
To enter the contest leave me a comment. For additional entries tweet, post to Facebook or blog about the contest. Please leave additional comments for each entry. Contest ends Monday October 12.

I would LOVE to learn how to decorate cakes. Thanks!!
I would love this video.
I made a Barbie cake for my daughter’s birthday that I was very proud of. I have 4 little ones so it’s always someone’s birthday.
I will be doing the barbie cake in the next three days…baking and freezing cakes today for construction and frosting friday night. Have NO CLUE how to use frosting tips…would LOVE this prize…will post on facebook and twitter. Thank you!!!
I would like to have my name entered into this contest because I, too, enjoy decorating cakes for my children and other family members. I would like to learn the names and proper uses of the tips I have for my cookie press. Thank you for a wonderful blog and contests.
I would love, love, love the decorating video! I once took a basic class and came away with … well…nothing. Nothing! I was still back on “this is how you fill your decorating bag” and everyone else had beautiful roses already made and on their cake! I was the first person she had ever had in a class that never learned to make a rose. I failed. Seriously, I didn’t earn my certificate. I need to be able to watch the video over and over, ’til I get it right!
oops, meant to add … my husband’s sweet comment after I got home from the class was, “Costco cakes are looking pretty good!”
He is still breathing … barely.
I could sure use some help with my cakes!
I have always wanted to see how to decorate a cake. I would love to have the video!

My sister in law decorates wedding cakes. While I don’t think this will teach me how to do that one, I’d love to learn some basic cake decorating!

I’d only ever made a sheet cake with bad icing. This summer I attempted my very first cake:

This would be so much fun!! Thank you!
have wanted to learn to decorate cakes a long time. would be great to win.
This would be great! I took a class, but I sure could use a refresher!
I have wanted to take a class but don’t have the time or money.
My mom always decorated cakes for my sister and I, as well as other people, when I was growing up. It was a natural thing for me to pick up the basics and do the same for my own kids. However, when perfectionism rears its ugly head and turns mommy into a crabby bear who yells all day…..I start to wonder if the monetary savings is worth it. *smile* However, I have learned to go more simple on the decoration than I used to, and it has helped a lot!
I started learning to decorate cakes from a woman at church. She became ill, and we had to stop, but I would love to take it up again. My husband too since I put some money into it. Thanks for all the giveaways.
Please enter me, thanks for the giveaway!
I love to bake and decorate cakes, this would be a great thing to have! I have always wanted to take the Wilton Decorating classes but can’t work it into my schedule.
I miss baking!I am always so busy but I love cake decorating and miss it a lot.
Ok – I’ve tried my hand at this a few times in the past but haven’t been that excited about the results thus far. I’ve invested in several icing tips but just haven’t made the time to take a class so I’d LOVE the flexibility to learn at home and on my own time. Fingers crossed!

I REALLY would LOVE this DVD. We already make our own cakes & the kids love choosing the themes, but they look NOTHING like the pic you’ve posted!
I make my kids cakes every year, and vow that next year I am buying the cakes. But, I never do. It seems I always have some needy child when I need to make the cake! I would love to win the video and learn more skills.
This sounds great. My daughter would really love to learn how to do this also!
I would love a chance to learn how to do this better. Thanks!
