For great meals for less you can purchase at your local store visit $5 Dinner’s new feature, Bargain Meal of the Week. Bloggers around the country create a bargain meal based on their local store sales.
If you shop at the commissary you probably know their prices change every two weeks. Not only do sales run on a two week basis, but many of their everyday low prices change as well. Each Monday I will be posting a bargain meal, created from current commissary deals.
This week’s bargain meal is shepherd’s pie.
Shepherd’s Pie
- Ground turkey $1.00 a pound
- Betty Crocker Mashed Potato Mix $.90
- Pic Sweet Frozen Corn $.90 for 16 oz bag
- Kraft Shredded Cheese $1 for 1 cup
Brown the turkey and make the potatoes according to directions. Spray baking dish with nonstick. Spread cooked ground turkey on the bottom of the dish. Sprinkle with corn. Then spread on the potatoes. Cover with foil and bake for about 20 minutes. Uncover and sprinkle with cheese and bake another 5 minutes. This dish freezes very well and can also be made a few days ahead and stored in the fridge until baking.
Total cost 4 Servings $3.80
While at the commissary today I noticed that Hamburger Helper is on sale for $.90 a box. There are coupons for $1 off 5 available in the commissary. If you mix with ground turkey you have a meal for under $2.

Excellent frugal meal! I have a hard time finding meat that cheap though. I am keeping my eye out though and my freezer is ready…

Our comissary is somewhat far away. I haven’t been there since the price of gas skyrocketed this summer.
BUT, I should probably go back. Meat for $1 a pound is great!
Thanks for posting this!

Since your shepherd’s pie was only $3.80, I’d cut up an onion to add to the meat, just for more flavor.
