Challenge Butter Giveaway

November 23, 2009 · 114 comments

This contest is now closed, Linda is our winner. Thanks for entering! I hope one of my readers wins the big trip!

It is no secret that I love butter. A few years ago I stopped using margarine and started using butter exclusively. I am thankful that the commissary prices are reasonable because I buy eight pounds of butter a month! I use it in most of my recipes! From pasta to pancakes it is one of my cooking staples.

I was thrilled when Challenge Butter contacted me and asked if I wanted to give some butter to my readers! For those of you who are still using margarine, please enter this giveaway so you have a chance to taste the difference.

Sauces are tastier, soups are creamy, and frosting is yummier when you use real butter in your recipes. If you have some wiggle room in your grocery budget I highly recommend switching to butter.

Challenge 1LB Package PhotoChallenge Butter is also sponsoring a few great giveaways on their website. You can enter to win A Taste of the West vacation, a 7-day/6-night trip for 4 people to the incredible Mountain Sky Guest Ranch (mtnsky.com) in Montana’s Paradise Valley, just North of Yellowstone National Park.

In addition to world-class fine dining, the guest ranch features cozy accommodations, horseback riding, hiking, fishing, rock climbing, clay shooting and much more! Revive, rejuvenate and reconnect with a variety of activities for everyone.

Airfare, food, accommodations and certain activities are all-included in this $17,000 luxury getaway.

A runner-up will win a $850 kitchen package from Spice Islands and OXO.

Visit the website to enter to win and read all the fine print.

To win 3 coupons for Free Challenge Butter please leave a comment on this post. I will pick a winner Friday, November 27, 2009.

This potato soup recipe is a great way to use up those Thanksgiving/ Christmas leftovers, and one of my many recipes in which butter makes it better. It makes a great meal or side dish.

Mel’s Potato Soup
  • 5 pounds of potatoes, peeled and quartered (if you are using red potatoes you can keep the skin on if you like potato skin in your soup).
  • 1 onion diced
  • 1 Stick of butter
  • Chopped ham
  • Salt, Pepper, Garlic to taste
  • Milk

Boil potatoes and onion for about twenty minutes.

Challenge Butter Giveaway

Drain (but save the water)

Challenge Butter Giveaway

Put the potatoes and onion back on the stove top and add about 2 cups of the potato water back into the pot

Add 1 stick of butter

Mash the potatoes to the desired consistency. The more you mash the smoother the soup will be.

Challenge Butter Giveaway

Add chopped ham and salt, pepper, and garlic to taste.

Challenge Butter Giveaway

Then add milk, until you reach the desired consistency.

Cook on the stove for about 10 minutes and then serve.

Garnish with cheese.

Challenge Butter Giveaway

Don’t throw away the extra potato water, use it instead of water to bake your next loaf of bread. Your loaf will be amazing!

Challenge Butter Giveaway

This is not the bread pictured with the soup, this is our potato bread for French toast.

The bread pictured with the soup is whole wheat rosemary asiago bread.

You can modify this recipe to use your leftover mashed potatoes from Thanksgiving. Adjust the amount of potatoes based on how much mashed potatoes you have leftover. Add them when you are mashing the cooked potatoes.

I use margarine but would like to switch to butter. I don’t know if the kids would mind?

2 Zan November 23, 2009 at 10:49 am

We made the switch from margarine to butter a couple of years ago. You are correct that everything tastes better with butter. Our kids noticed that things tasted better. I do soften a little and add some olive oil to what we will be using for sliced bread so that we can get a healthy oil in. ;)

3 Molly November 23, 2009 at 11:00 am

I have been trying to make the switch but my budget is a problem. I would love some coupons!!

4 Stephanie November 23, 2009 at 11:02 am

BUTTER IS BETTER! :)

5 Karen Linnartz November 23, 2009 at 11:13 am

I love this butter!

6 Bree November 23, 2009 at 11:20 am

I have to admit I still buy a tub margarine for spreading on toasts to make it easier for the kids, but for cooking I love butter.

7 Brandie November 23, 2009 at 11:24 am

I only use butter! I have noticed a huge difference in taste. My friends all want the secret to my cookies. I tell them use BUTTER!!

8 La Yen November 23, 2009 at 11:26 am

I too keep around the marg, but only for toast spreading. But baking with butter is the tastiest.

9 Brandie November 23, 2009 at 11:29 am

I love your new header! And your subscribe buttons and that your comments are at the bottom!!!

10 Kelly November 23, 2009 at 11:29 am

butter is best!! thanks!

11 Cherilyn November 23, 2009 at 11:36 am

Your soup recipes always look so tasty! Count me in for the draw – we are a butter family too.

12 Anne-Marie November 23, 2009 at 11:37 am

I switched to butter only within the past 2 yrs.

I didn’t use to think that butter made economic sense until I read that most people over-compensate with margarine to acquire the same tastiness as butter….negating fat, calories, & savings issues.

I purchase between 4 to 8 lbs of butter monthly too (depends on what I’m baking). I try to stock up when it’s on BOGO. I recently bought a high-priced brand for $1.50 a lb. That’s comparable to buying a high-priced brand of margarine. I usually find it on sale at least once a month…especially during a holiday season…whether it be Christmas or Easter or 4th of July.

But sadly, I have not heard of Challenge Butter (have not seen it at any local stores). It seems to be available in the Western-US only. But there is a coupon on their Where to Buy page for anyone in their retail area.

13 Joy November 23, 2009 at 11:39 am

I love Challenge butter! I but it at our commissary because it’s the best-priced butter there!

14 Jennifer H. November 23, 2009 at 11:45 am

I love butter! My hubby prefers margarine, but I’m hoping to convince him that butter is better! I’m starting to sneak it into my cooking and drop hints that I used butter instead of margarine. :)

15 Penny November 23, 2009 at 11:50 am

I “heart” butter!

16 Leene November 23, 2009 at 11:51 am

We use butter for everything – I’ve tried Challenge butter before and can taste the difference in the mashed potatoes, they’re so creamy. I very rarely buy Challenge butter though because I am just so used to Land O’ Lakes that I don’t think about it. I hardly ever see coupons for the butter sticks but will stock up when they go on sale at the commissary or grocery stores, butter freezes very well and I’ve always got a few boxes stored.

17 Rona November 23, 2009 at 12:01 pm

My husband and I just love butter! It’s a must-have when you’re baking!

18 Stefanie November 23, 2009 at 12:13 pm

I love butter too! Actually just made a commissary run for a few Thanksgiving staples and Challenge butter was one of my purchases!

19 Jen November 23, 2009 at 12:22 pm

I LOVE using butter! I made the switch from margarine a couple of years ago and never looked back. Just recently my husband finally convinced me to switch from unsalted to salted butter and, WOW, what a difference! The only time I don’t use butter is in certain cookies, biscuits, and pie crust because I find that butter-flavored shortening makes those few items a little crisper and flaky – but that’s just a personal choice, real butter still rules my kitchen!

20 Erin November 23, 2009 at 12:25 pm

I love love love love butter. Like you, I use it exclusively and have been for years…I think real butter and fresh garlic are the two staples I use most in my cooking…my kids are never sick either (attributed from the garlic I think ;) This would be a great prize to win!

21 Tatiana November 23, 2009 at 12:28 pm

We love butter in this casita! Thanks for the chance to win!

22 Jodi November 23, 2009 at 12:29 pm

That potato soup looks yummy!

23 Mamie November 23, 2009 at 12:32 pm

I, too, have switched exclusively to butter – it’s the only way to cook/bake! :)

24 Denise~Paper Ponderings November 23, 2009 at 12:33 pm

I use butter exclusively too and would love, love, love to win some for free!! I was raised mostly on margarine and much prefer the natural stuff…the taste is just so much better!!!

25 Misc Jenn November 23, 2009 at 12:38 pm

Reusing the potato water is genius, I can’t wait to try that!

Also, I use butter all the time. There really is a marvelous taste difference.

26 Jaclyn November 23, 2009 at 12:44 pm

I switched to butter as well…so good!

27 Theresa November 23, 2009 at 12:45 pm

Real butter is so much better than margarine.

28 Tracy November 23, 2009 at 12:59 pm

I love real butter, and try to only by the real stuff. I definitely notice the difference when I do use margarin.

29 miranda November 23, 2009 at 1:04 pm

I only use butter too and I’m also thankful for the commissary prices on it!! Don’t know what I’ll do when we transition to civilian life next year and I lose the commissary!!

30 Carrie November 23, 2009 at 1:06 pm

butter makes everything taste so good

31 Heather @ Marine Corps Nomads November 23, 2009 at 1:08 pm

We recently started buying Challenge butter from our commissary when we moved over here to the west coast. We go through a good amount of butter, so coupons would be very welcome!

32 Jennifer Call November 23, 2009 at 1:20 pm

Oh free butter-I love butter, just trying to fit it into the budget!

33 Lawanna November 23, 2009 at 1:21 pm

I’ve found myself buying more butter over the years and phasing out margarine. would love to try this brand.

34 Kira November 23, 2009 at 1:24 pm

I have switched to using all challenge butter as well…we love it. I’d love a break in the budget with some free butter. :)

35 Dondi November 23, 2009 at 1:24 pm

What a fabulous post. I love me some butter. I still use margarine for some things but most of the time it’s gotta be butter.
And yay for the recipe. I {heart} potatoe soup!! Thanks!

Btw, I left something for you on my blog.

36 Joscelyn November 23, 2009 at 1:27 pm

I love butter, dont use anything else for baking. occasionally ill buy the non-dairy stuff for toast but cant imagine using that for cooking. this would really come in handy with all the baking im doing for the holidays

37 Kat November 23, 2009 at 1:34 pm

I only use butter but have never tried the Challenge brand. I hope I win.

BTW…REAL butter makes everything taste so much better!!!

38 B-Dub November 23, 2009 at 1:39 pm

Butter, butter, butter, butter, oh how I love you butter, butter, butter!

I was visiting a friend this last week and we made chocolate chip cookies. She only had margarine. Imagine my disappointment. Especially when the cookies tasted like crap. Reaffirmed my butter commitment.

Delish butter, where would I be without you?

39 Linda November 23, 2009 at 1:53 pm

We too love butter! Rich, creamy, true butter. We live very frugally but always, always buy butter.

40 Chandy November 23, 2009 at 1:54 pm

I also refuse to use margarine. GO BUTTER!!

41 kathy steadman November 23, 2009 at 1:55 pm

Butter is best!

42 Serenity November 23, 2009 at 2:22 pm

Are you sharing the recipe for the asiago rosemary bread? It looks delish! I will have to try the soup , too. Yummy :)

43 Todd November 23, 2009 at 2:31 pm

Mmmmmm……..Butter

44 Georgi November 23, 2009 at 2:31 pm

I grew up in a family who used margarine, it was just another cost savings that my mom used. When I met my mother-in-law, who was a wonderful cook, I learned the joy of butter. I have not purchased margarine for anything since then and I love it. It gives an extra dimension to the food, and when you think about it, butter is better for you than margarine. Go Butter!

45 Tonya November 23, 2009 at 3:26 pm

I MUCH prefer real butter to margarine and use it for serious cooking. I really believe that our bodies don’t really know what to do with margarine since it’s not a natural food product. Although butter has fat, it’s much better (and tastier) than something man-made any day of the week.

46 Ginger Ditmore November 23, 2009 at 3:29 pm

I would love to try butter, I have never really tried real butter. I heard it is better for you as also, so I would love to try it.
Thank-you,
Ginger

47 Jennifer November 23, 2009 at 3:31 pm

Butter people here. I do use organic smart balance to butter my bread but other wise it’s butter all the way.

48 Susan November 23, 2009 at 3:34 pm

Great giveaway. I use butter exclusively too because it’s all natural. I just switched to Challege Butter a few weeks ago, so these coupons would be great!

49 Kelly November 23, 2009 at 3:45 pm

Mmmmm, butter. I come from a family of butter snobs–they will not under any circumstances use margarine, and it’s funny, my grandma makes an incredible, incredible, incredible English toffee that none of us have ever been able to successfully replicate and she swears the secret is Challenge butter.

50 Justine November 23, 2009 at 4:31 pm

I’m confused… how do we enter the giveaway?
