Apple Sauce ~ Healthy Snack and Substitute

My children love applesauce. It is one of the few convenience foods I still purchase for my family. Combining coupons and sales I can usually buy applesauce for cheaper than I could make it myself. I even buy the individual containers for traveling and field trips a special treat for my kids, plus it is much better for them than a cupcake or gummy snack.

I also use apple sauce as a substitute for oil in most of my recipes. It doesn’t affect the taste at all, and your baked goods turn out so moist when you use apple sauce instead of oil. My banana muffins are made with applesauce, and I usually substitute apple sauce for oil in cakes too.

Musselman’s has offered an apple sauce gift pack to one of my readers to help make your Christmas a little merrier. I know in our family apple sauce is a must have side at Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner. Leave a comment and you will be entered to win the gift pack. Contest ends Saturday December 12th.

Our family LOVES applesauce. I make homemade but that is never enough, and always end up buying some throughout the year.

I love applesauce. I’ve always liked it OK, but now that I’m pregnant it’s something I really and truly crave. I eat the unsweetened kind (I love Musselman’s!) with a little bit of cinnamon sprinkled on top. Delicious. Thanks for doing this giveaway!

I generally make my own applesauce because I like the taste, but I still enjoy store bought…just add a little cinnamon!

(different rebecca than above)

We love applesauce in our house. My husband will buy the large containers and drink them on the way to work, or while commuting from work to school. Ok, so that’s a little strange and possibly gross, but it shows how much applesauce we can go through. We also keep the little applesauce cups on hand. It used to be for my daughter who loved them, but now she doesn’t care for soupy things and prefers sliced apples. That’s ok though because if anyone gets sick we have lots of little containers of applesauce to offer them during the day. And it doesn’t even get a bowl or plate messy. And yes that is a priority some days.

Applesauce is one of the few ways I can get my youngest to eat fruit. I mix it in his oatmeal with some cinnamon, I put it in a sundae dish with a cherry on top, and even serve it with chicken nuggets for him to dip in.

We love applesauce at our house too. I have really been trying to replace the oil in my baking recipies. I also love to buy the little cups because of the different flavor combinations.

Applesauce is a staple at our house. There’s always a jar in the fridge, one in the cabinet, and several back ups in the basement! This would be great for my family.

My son has a rare deficiency that requires medication every day. Since he’s only 19 months, I have to break up the tablets and mix it into food and guess what I usually use—an applesauce cup! The cups are great because it’s a perfect serving for him and easier for me to mix in. Plus the variety of flavors helps the routine seem not so mundane.

I buy applesauce in the snack packs for my son who is in college, great for the dormroom! He has never outgrown his love of applesause and he loves all the new fruit combinations too, most with no sugar added.

Glad to hear we are not alone! We purchase sugar free applesauce and go thru about a pack or two per week. Sometimes i feel guilty but its something both girls are willing to eat in a heartbeat and I figure its a better snack then chips!

We LOVE applesauce too! We get the unsweetened kind as well. The ones with sugar are too sweet.

28 Lynn December 9, 2009 at 11:51 am

Thank you. We have used unsweetened applesauce as an oil substitute, too. It was in an emergency kind of ‘what do we do, we have no oil for this cake?’ situation. It was a box mix with low fat substitution directions on it. It was good.

I personally love homemade applesauce (in the slow cooker) but my girls enjoy taking the pre-packaged containers to school for a snack or as part of their lunch.

I usually don’t have applesauce on hand, but I’ve discovered that I can grate an apple and use that in the place of applesauce in most recipes. I wonder if that would work in place of oil too since the grated apples tend to cook down…hum…maybe something to experiment with…in our spare time–lol.

I love applesauce! I made some this year because I got the apples for less than $3.00 a bushel, and one bushel made 15 quarts I think.

I always eat the unsweetened kind.

Applesauce in place of oil is a WONDERFUL way to cut fat and calories! I’ve been doing this for YEARS!

My kids LOVE LOVE LOVE dipping grilled ham and cheese sandwiches in applesauce. To the point that I say, “Okay, who wants grilled ham and cheese?!” and the reply I get is, “Is there any applesauce?”

Thanks for the give-a-way! I’m fairly new to your blog but I love it. I too am the hero of a single income family. We have 4… plus 2 cats and 2 dogs. Anyone can do this if it’s their priority.
Be Blessed :)
