Adding Images to a Post

When adding images to your post here are few tips.

  • Images should “live” on the website, not on a third party site like photobucket or flickr.
  • Images should be no more than 500 to 550 pixels wide. Anything larger than 550 and it won’t fit in the text area. Remember to resize your images before uploading them to the site.
  • Horizontal images work better than vertical on a website.
  • It is okay to use a stock image, just remember to give photo credit at the bottom of the article.
Resizing and Compressing Images
It is best to both resize and compress images before uploading them to the web.
What’s the difference?
  • Resizing affects the image dimensions making it larger or smaller.  Ideally, pictures should be between 400 and 500 pixels wide for adding to posts on this site.
  • Compression reduces the size of the file (which is different than the size of the image).
How to resize and compress?
  • Pixlr Express – online, free, and easy. I like this one the best.  Choose “browse” to upload an image. Click “adjustment” then “resize.”  Set the width you want (at least 400, 500 is better) and apply.  To compress the image, you have to save it and adjust the quality slider.  85 is usually good unless it’s a very large image, then you might want to go to 80.  Press “save” and add .jpg to the end of the file name.  For some reason is doesn’t do that automatically.
  • Shrink Pictures - online, free, and easy.  You can set your dimensions and choose your compression.  The “Better” setting is good for web pages.
  • Image Optimizer - online, free, and easy.  Same as above.  Choose “high quality” quality for compression
  • Various other software and online photo editing sites allow you to resize and compress.  Just keep in mind that the two are not the same.

How to upload a photo and insert it into a post.

1. Find the image you want to use and then upload it into the post.

Adding Images to a Post

2. Upload the photo and then remember to add a title.

Adding Images to a Post

The title should match either the title of your post or name of the image. For example if you are writing a post about homechooling through chronic illness then title your image “homeschooling through chronic illness.”

If you are writing a recipe or tutorial title the images the same name as the recipe or tutorial.

Examples of  Image Titles

  • pumpkin pie pancakes
  • homemade caramel corn
  • DIY chalkboard wall
  • t-shirt dress tutorial

Featured Image

Because there is a slider on the home page of the website, each post needs to have an image that is featured in the slider. If your post has multiple images, use the best one for the “featured image.”  Remember to click the featured image link for at least one photo in your post.
