3 Moms ~ 3 Kitchens ~ 31 Days

April 30, 2008 > 16 Comments

Around the blog world there are daily posts by frugal bloggers showing off their best deals of the week. I love looking at the bargains people are getting, but sometimes I wonder, “Can they be living off free toothpaste, shampoo and cereal?” If you have ever wondered what an entire month of shopping looks like for someone who is probably just like you, trying to raise a family and save money on a limited budget, then you will love the adventure two of my blogger friends and I are about to begin

For the next thirty-one days you are invited into my kitchen. I will show you all of my menu planning, shopping trips, meals, and even some favorite recipes.

If you are not a regular reader of my blog, here is a little background information about me. I am a homeschooling mom of six kids, ages two to thirteen. We are a military family living in the D.C. area. Since the grocery prices out in town are very high, I do most of my shopping at the military commissary.

In my kitchen, my goals this month are to dramatically increase the amount of fruits and vegetables we are eating and continue to gradually wean ourselves from processed foods. I will be doing some of my shopping this month at a co-op and we will also be on vacation for part of the month so that should add an interesting twist to the budget, which is $600 for the month.

My two adventurous friends are Kate and Joy. Kate is responsible for thinking up this wonderful idea, and Joy designed our great banner. On Kate’s blog, you will see her once a month shopping trip, where her goal is to spend about $250 of her $300 a month budget. Joy is a newbie to menu planning. She has set a goal of $450 a month for her family of five. She will be focusing on make-ahead meals and only shopping every other week. Both Kate and Joy will be posting in detail about their food budgets, menu planning, shopping trips, daily meals, and recipes.

Our kitchen doors are wide open, so come on in. We hope you enjoy our grand adventure!

I think this is a wonderful idea! I’m excited to see how you ladies do, and also getting some helpful ideas and tips for my own use! I have never been successful at meal planning, budgeting, and freezing meals, but am hoping your experiences will change that! Thanks for posting this series!

What a fun idea! I’m in the DC (NOVA) area too by the way. About an hour away from the Ft. Myers commissary, and a little further from the Ft. Belvoir commissary. That’s fun!

Goya kidney beans and black beans are $0.39 per can; that’s a great savings.
